Laguna Seca

— Mary Ann Savage

Evaporated
from the edges inward
now dry everywhere.
Not even a dark spot
marks the center place
where a puddle nurtured weeds
this spring.

Perhaps that harsh, brittle clump
above tenacious root
still lives, but shows
no trace of green.
It is now one in color
with surrounding, inert
pebbles, a light film of dust,
covering everything.
