An Appointment I Can Not Break

— Judith Oppenheimer

may be when I’m eighty or
today as I’m driving home.
or any night after
the moon rises.

It could occur in a hospital or at home.

Will it linger
suck life
not only from me but
my son, my friends?

I hope when the time is near
I will be with family and friends,
that afterwords they will drink tequila and dance.
