Looking Up

— Nick Butterfield

Usually, I’m looking down when walking.
Sometimes I peak
And notice the UPS driver seems
Clean cut.
I hear Buster Posey hit a Grand Slam.
Later, a politician laughed
And the people prayed.
Better to watch the ground
Moving under my feet.
Fingers feel like falling
Like rain drops in sunlight.
My grip loosens
And my thoughts abstract.
Fish will learn to swim
Moving about in schools.
On a rainy day, I’ll stay home
And look and listen.

  1. "Better to watch the ground/ Moving under my feet."Subtle and wise advice. Sometimes in life, the only thing that we can do is to keep on moving.I think of one of my favorite songs from Fiona Apple, "Extraordinary Machine":"I can’t help it, the road just rolls out behind meBe kind to me, or treat me meanI’ll make the most of it, I’m an extraordinary machine."
