— David Eisbach
When I awake ahead of the sun
And greet the world before me,
All is silent and resting still.
The golden orb lifts the curtain to beauty,
defines the mountain’s unique crown
and the trees, along its hem.
A lone gull, with somewhere to go
skims the valley’s mist,
as evening’s shadows weaken.
A banana slug
way off course
doesn’t protest my help.
A humming bird in iridescent colors,
then rests upon a twig.
Scrimshaw of prints
from cat, raccoon and jay
etch the heavy dew on the deck.
A platoon of Bushtits dart into a tree
and begin their joyous toil.
Just to please me.
