Since Willow Glen is a very haiku-friendly venue, I just have to pass this on…
NASA is raising awareness for its upcoming launch of the MAVEN spacecraft this November. The craft will study the Martian atmosphere, giving scientists insight into how the planet might have lost most of its air and water.
To get the public involved, NASA has invited us Earthlings to submit haiku messages written for the occasion. Three poets will be selected by public vote to have their messages included on the special DVD that will travel on the spacecraft. The DVD will also include the names of all submitters.
Anyone can enter, though you must be 18 or older to create a log-in. This means that children should get a parent or teacher to help them enter. Also, all haiku must be in English.
The deadline is July 1, 2013. Public voting to select the haiku will begin July 15. Winners will be announced August 8.
You can find rules and the web entry form at the the Going to Mars with MAVEN site.
