Something You Didn’t Mean To Do

— Vicki L. Harvey

I know you didn’t mean to leave

The memory of people that came
and went in our lives flash
through me from time to time

The ghost of our favorite places
appear and waves of sadness
flood over me

I hear you laugh on a summer
evening as we float in the
round cedar hot tub

I celebrate times together
looking at the calendar
Birthdays, vacations, when
we met, when you left

All the experiences between
us begin to blend—become
cloud covered in my mind

I whisper to the butterfly
to touch you with comfort
in the month of October
when the rain begins

I want proof that I will see you
As I walk across the room
Full of your photographs
