Boxing Day

— Barbara Saxton

Just when it seemed safe
Another one’s in the bag!
Christmas creeps from his corner
coated in reddish green crumbs
to land yet another
sucker punch to the gut.

In the midst of this mess
of cleaved wrappings, parched needles
and pale half-licked canes, I croon
to the bittersweet strains of memory:
Mom’s face and her voice.
God rest ye merry,
Gentle woman.
