Memory Hag

— Janet Trenchard

A checkerboard pattern emerges from
under the long gray strands of a mop
-Oh, Hag of memory, you wash
away the things I want to remember,
crumbs  and frosting of birthday cakes
but leave behind the dark stains, scratches,
of red wine, curses
and  broken glass crushed
underfoot.
