People and Bodies

— William Baldwin

People are people
And bodies are bodies;
But people and bodies
Seem strange, unfamiliar
When you wake beside them
Unexpecting, startled;
Or speak to them
With no special warning
Or preparation.
“Who is this?”
“Who are you?”

Every voluntary contact between people
Involves relaxing a barrier
That keeps you separate.

An intentional connection requires
An ongoing commitment
To a special closeness.
