Night Owls

— Janet Trenchard

My friend, the owl expert
and I drank our way through happy
hour and into the evening
as she explained that certain owls
could sound like a woman
crying, or a whispered
“hush”, loud and long,
some owls seemed to cry “whisssskey”,
others make sounds like the men
at the next table, soft, rhythmic,
punctuated with low explosive tones,
then infused with the keening of a flute,
the deep low sigh of bass viol.
For me, it was enough to know
that it could be owls calling to me
through whiskey,
hooting through Delta blues,
and whispering through the men
at the next table.
