Don’t Tread on Us

— Dennis Noren

A message is sent, an anthem appears,
this snake is coiled to strike.
Don’t tread on me, all who pass near.

Welcome is twisted around to a sneer,
what’s shared is unsure from the start.
A message is sent, a trigger of fear.

“I’ve got what is mine, you run to get yours”
however you scratch and you claw.
Don’t tread on me, all who pass near.

But the snake has forgotten what brought us here;
the rope is made strong from its strands
and messages heard by many an ear.

The us of us must fly its flag higher
So we mix, so we build, so we wish to
break bread together in a land that is wider.

The general welfare advances us on,
a more perfect union is what we still seek.
A message is sent, an anthem appears.
Walk with your neighbor, all who live here.
